LACTATION ROOMS

Increasing numbers of employers are setting up lactation rooms for new moms.  There are many advantages to the moms and to the organizations.  The number one advantage being that breastfed babies have fewer illnesses, as much as one-third to one-eighth as often as bottle-fed babies.  As a result, moms who breastfeed will take fewer sick days.  It is, thus, in the employer's interest to make continuing to breastfeed as easy as possible.

Setting up a lactation program can be very simple.  If you want to provide just the basics, all you need is a little bit of space, privacy, an electrical outlet, a table and a chair.  If you want to add more to your lactation program, consider adding some of the following:

  • Electric breast pump(s) bought or rented

  • A sink to wash hands and rinse pump attachments

  • Soft lighting

  • Comfortable chairs

  • Footstool

  • Reading materials such as parenting magazines

  • Telephones & computers so that women can conduct business while pumping

  • Refrigerator for storing milk (though you will need to implement some labeling procedures so that milk is not mixed up!)  And make sure that it is used exclusively for milk.

  • Emergency bottles and collection items

  • Clock

  • Lockers or hooks to hang clothing

  • Breastfeeding classes

  • Lactation consultations

  • Management training - they will need to understand the importance of being flexible to allow women to take breaks to pump - and they may have misconceptions about how long a woman will be away from the job.
